As the inaugural guests of our first Colorado Tango Encuentro event, we are very proud to present the RETURN of our beloved tango maestros Gustavo Naveira & Giselle Anne in their encore appearance in the Rocky Mountain region! Many of you visiting this site will need no introduction to them. But for others, perhaps it's enough to say that these stunning tango dancers, choreographers and teachers represent the pinnacle of one of the most significant trends in the present and future development of the art of Argentine Tango. |

"Tango is ultimately a relationship" -Gustavo For more than 20 years, Gustavo Naveira has been at the forefront of cutting-edge investigations into tango structure, musicality and expression. During its revival as a popular dance in Argentina in the 1980's, his early experiences as a student, teacher and performer led to his obsessive pursuit of the structural roots of the tango social dance phenomenon. Ever since, Gustavo has tirelessly investigated and taught ways of understanding and explaining the structure and dynamics of the tango experience to Argentines and foreigners alike. |
|
"Better technique...it can be a pleasure"-Giselle Many say that the most significant influence on the development of tango dance in the last 50 years has been the arrival of increasing numbers of well-trained and talented women dancers. What had been a brutish representation of gender conflict and subjugation grew to represent instead an elegant and passionately intense "collaborative work of art." Giselle Anne's inspiring clarity of technique and expression, deriving from her remarkable string of achievements in the worlds of ballet, stage, screen and tango, creates a magnificent foundation for her explorations of the radiantly beautiful possibilities of the "tango de la mujer." |

"Face the Tango as it is!" We first studied with Gustavo in 1999, and first met Giselle in 2003. Many, many hours of advanced seminarios later, we count them as the tango couple who best personify, in body, mind and spirit, the heart and soul of what tango is, and what it can become. We are profoundly honored to again invite you into a deep exploration of the many-faceted tango of this radiantly inspiring couple. |

From their website:
| GISELLE: She has demonstrated her abilities as a dancer and choreographer by performing in shows such as Tango Argentino, Tango Pasión, Mariano Mores, and Los Solistas de D'Arienzo. She has performed in America, Europe and Japan, and during the five years of her residence in Spain (1992-1997) she worked intensely with the tango: creating her own ballet, founding a school and inaugurating the “Casa del Tango” (Tango House) in Sevilla. The presence and solidity of her dance are balanced perfectly with the beauty of her movements, and this ensures that her dancing is always at the highest level. |
|
GUSTAVO: Dancer and internationally ranking choreographer, he is also the pioneer of a new technique of teaching the tango, now famous worldwide. After more than twenty years of experience and touring all over the world , he imparts his knowledge with conceptual clarity and a rich technique. Being an exceptional analyst and investigator, his abilities have revolutionized tango dancing towards the end of the 20th century. Those who best know the world of tango dancing also appreciate his knowledge of tango dancing history and styles which he knows how to materialize through the creativity of his improvisations. The critics in Bs. As. said: "…You could say that three stylistic tendencies contend for supremacy: Urquiza's style, Almagro's style and Naveira's style …" (Clarín 8/8/99, Buenos Aires Argentina). |

"...inclined towards the aesthetic, the technical, and extremely able in
the choreographic composition of the musical rhythm: they are Gustavo &
Giselle…” (“L'Arena”, 8/5/99, Verona, Italia); “…standing out was the quality of one of the best couples that currently exists: Giselle Anne & Gustavo Naveira …” (“Tangoneón”, dec.99, Madrid, España). |
"...Gustavo Naveira and Giselle Anne represent one of the very great expressive forms of the argentine tango. Teaching since many years in Argentina and in Europe, they are an obliged reference for there dancing style and their teaching technique at the same time closed to tradition. Naveira (also well-known for his participation in the film "The Tango Lesson" from Sally Potter) is universally known for his prodigious technique and original style. Giselle Anne for her virtuous and beautiful dancing that has brought her as choreographer and dancer to famous shows. But their most important characteristic is the capacity of transmitting the sense of harmony, intensity and passion that join the couple of tango dancers....” ( Il Piccolo, 22nd November 2002, Trieste, Italia). | |

Join a group of twenty-five couples in a 20-hour Seminario with Gustavo & Giselle! What attendees had to say about last year's program: - "This has changed my tango forever..." - "...for the first time in a long time, this event really reminded me why I want to dance tango..." - "...I beg you to repeat this program at LEAST once a year!" So, of course, we're repeating the best elements of last year! As part of your entry we'll have practice times, a Monday night welcome milonga on July 21st, time set aside for attending local tango practicas and for recreating in the mountains, a big Saturday blowout milonga on July 26th with GyG performing, and other mouthwatering surprises! PLUS! More cool surprises on the way...stay tuned!! YES! We're back at the majestic Avalon Ballroom! Dance with us in Boulder's magnificent new dance venue, designed and built by social dancers explicitly for social dancing, with features like a huge kitchen/dining area and a brand-new $20,000 sound system! Everyone involved in social dancing in Boulder is still getting used to having this jewel here in our laps. If anything, it's even better than last year, since the volunteers have made more progress on the finishing details - but you alumni from 2007 know that it was PLENTY good already! Space reservations are getting tight, but we scored even MORE nights at the Avalon this year for workshops!

LODGING RECOMMENDATIONS: Boulder is about 40 minutes from Denver International Airport, with service to all major destinations. The Boulder SuperShuttle can transport you from the airport to any address in Boulder at reasonable rates - they have a counter in the airport's main terminal.
We recommend trying priceline.com to see if you can get a better rate than what is quoted - some dancers report savings of 25%. Other fine Boulder hotels run from $140 to $240/night. The St. Julien hotel is the most luxurious, The Boulderado is the most historically charming (Teddy Roosevelt was a frequent guest), and the Millennium Hotel will be very convenient to most Encuentro events.
