Dance of the Heart *Milongas

As of May 3, 2009, Sunday DoTH Milongas CANCELLED until further notice.

“BUILDING A BETTER WORLD, ONE TANGO AT A TIME”

Milongas are where Argentine Tango really happens: in little Buenos Aires social clubs (above left), after a tango theatrical performance (above right), in a Boulder dinner spot (below left) or in a converted dance studio (below right) - wherever tango music and dancers come together for the spontaneous improvised tango encounter, there you will find the spirit of the milonga.

On this page, you will find the current schedule for our DoTH Milongas (milonga: Argentine Tango social dance parties) plus others offered in Colorado! Over the years, we've hosted milongas and provided DJ services in a variety of locations and for a variety of organizations: in Boulder, around Colorado, across the USA and in other countries!  DoTH typically provides milongas in Boulder on two or more Saturday nights of every month, and starting in 2008 on two or more Sunday evenings as well.

As a courtesy to remind our community about individual milonga dates, we post an e-notice a few days prior to each one. To sign up for your complimentary e-notice, please email tangolessons@danceoftheheart.comTo view the below milonga schedule in a calendar format, please click here. Review of Select Past DoTH Milongas

Thank you, all, who attended our November 16 milonga in honor of visiting master Argentine Tango teacher TOMAS HOWLIN. What a delightful evening! Tomas provided a vivid and joyful spectacle of students demonstrating La Rueda de Milonga, which Tomas created based on a Cuban group dance that he taught in his master series this past week.

    --------------------------

To those of you who attended our Dance of the Heart Halloween milonga on October 26, we just want to warmly thank you for bringing your delightful Halloween and dancing spirits to our event! We had a truly frightening evening of dancing and lots of cool costumes to admire! Congratulations to Cathy Gaugh for winning the costume contest and Toshi Shinoda, our "electrifying" runner-up! First prize (after embarrassing ALL contestants!) was a Buenos Aires t-shirt (in MINT condition, of course - a rare keepsake!).

    -------------------------------

Our August milongas were unique and delightfully cool (thanks in part to a very good air conditioner performing at top speed!). Dan Diaz again performed a remarkable, brief number on solo bandoneon and we enjoyed the company of many out-of-state visitors hailing from Santa Fe, Manhattan, Los Angeles, Utah and Maine. Local cities represented: Fort Collins, Colorado Springs, Salt Lake City, Golden, Denver, Aspen, Glenwood Springs and of course, Boulder.

Thank you all for your on-going support. Turn-outs for our milongas continue to increase and Brian and Dave continue to provide inspiring music that kept people on the floor both evenings, well past 2 a.m. For those of you not in attendance, we missed you, but don't despair...future opportunities abound (see above schedule)!

    -------------------------------

Our Rain Dance milonga on July 20 was a resounding and delightful success! Sadly, we managed to lure only a few drops to descend, but at least the fires are out and it's cooler...we'll continue to polish our tango AND rain skills for next time! Meanwhile, thanks to all who attended.

We were awarded two very special treats at announcement time. One was an invitation. We have a rare opportunity to support a very dear tango friend, Dvora Kanegis. For those of you who don't know & are wondering why you haven't seen her around lately, Dvora has been unable to attend tango activities these past few months because she has been fighting a very challenging personal health battle. Please come to the following Fundraiser to help Dvora beat breast cancer (to make a tax deductible donation, make checks payable to JRCB, Rabbi¹s discretionary fund for Dvora. Send to: Jewish Renewal Community of Boulder, P.O. Box 21601, Boulder, Colorado 80308).

The other 'special treat' that evening arrived in the person of Daniel Diaz, bandoneonist and orchestra leader of The Tango Camerata. Dan very graciously agreed to play a few solos for us, and gamely encouraged everyone to dance. We all lost no time in taking immediately to the floor. It was a unique pleasure to dance to the solo bandoneon, to hear the instrument unaccompanied and unadorned...to experience afresh the depth of strength, passion, expressiveness and raw intensity it is capable of. Dan delivers a rare experience to we North Americans through his innate musicality and command of this singularly rich, sophisticated, insistent and complex instrument...that is a feeling, a flavor for what authentic Argentine Tango is all about and how the urgency of the bandoneon and the music drives the movement we love so well and study so intently.

His new CD, COMPILACION, is now available for purchase along with his earlier CD, THE TANGO CAMERATA. To obtain yours, please click on www.intellinks.com or make your requests known to Dave Schmitz, Deb or Brian.

For those of you not in attendance, we missed you, but don't despair...future opportunities abound! We host DANCE of the HEART milongas twice every month on Saturdays in Boulder.

    -------------------------------

On Saturday night, July 6, we had a remarkable evening. Soledad of Fabulous Dresses was set up in the lobby with a rack of sumptuous goodies to try on. The snack table was loaded with elegant, sinful sweets & a wide array of libations & great tandas kept couples on the floor dance after dance. At midnight, we introduced our guests of honor, visiting master teachers Luciana Valle & Alex Krebs. They graciously and flawlessly performed three riveting, extraordinary exhibition solo dances...the finale, a milonga, was the perfect, stunning close to this spectacular treat...pure eye candy! Luciana danced the exhibition in one of Soledad's gorgeous designs. We had over 70 people in attendance! Thank you, all, for sharing such a thrilling evening with us & for your overwhelming appreciation & support of LUCIANA & ALEX.

    -------------------------------

On Saturday night, June 8, what a fantastic & auspicious beginning for our summer DANCE of the HEART milongas we had...thank you, all who attended! We acknowledged our special out-of-town visitors: Hans & Brigitta from Berlin, Kristin from Tampa, Karen from Portland & Tessa & Ira from New York. Karen will be staying in our community for a few months, so be sure to get to know her & pester her for dances before she returns to Portland! We celebrated Teresa Wright's birthday & want to thank the leaders who participated in her "birthday dance." We unveiled our beautiful new DANCE of the HEART wall plaque, a remarkably gorgeous hand-made mosaic creation designed by the talented Kathy Discoe & our own TANGO COLORADO president, Chris Perkins! Dave Schmitz took on the role of late-night spin doctor, keeping us dancing 'til 2am. Strawberries, cheeses, nuts & chocolates were consumed along with many great tandas. Thanks to all who expressed their appreciation - it's a pleasure to share the dance with all of you!

    -------------------------------

What an evening we had at our milonga on Feb. 23 in honor of visiting master teacher Rodrigo Joe Corbata! Thanks to the many beginners and experienced dancers who attended our 'Intro to the Milonga' class at 9 p.m., the evening was off to a very auspicious start. By the time Joe and Roberta of Shut Up & Dance Productions arrived, the lesson had concluded and the milonga was in full swing.

A little after midnight, Joe and Roberta graciously performed an elegant solo demonstration to the delight and pleasure of all onlookers. When the warm applause eventually slowed, Joe addressed the room, thanking Roberta and acknowledging each teacher in the room by also performing a solo with Deb, then Lesa, then Heather.

He closed by offering a salute to the younger generation of tango in Colorado, encouraging them to continue the tradition of tango dance. We are very proud to list their names: Nick Jones, Carolyn Cawrse, Aja Duniven, Bret Engle, Mike Engle, Rachel Higgins (newly crowned Colorado's Junior Miss, 2002), Jeremy Moore and Louise Donnelly. For anyone we inadvertently overlooked, please write in so we can add your name to our list!

Thank you, Roberta, for bringing Joe to us, and thank you, Joe, for bringing your grace and energy, intelligence, humor and sophisticated, passionate style to our milongas, to our city, to our tango community. Buona fortuna and safe travels to you and your performing troupe on your upcoming tour in Japan. We hope you have another smashing success!!! Don't forget your friends in Colorado...we'll miss you, so come back soon!

    -------------------------------

On Feb. 9, we hosted a milonga at Bantaba in celebration of our wedding. We hope you all had a wonderful time dancing to the live music provided by the Tango Camerata, featuring our own Dan Diaz and vocalist Roberto Fortes.

We want to extend our deepest thanks to you all for helping us celebrate our marriage...we were so thrilled and moved to have so many of you there...all the beautiful cards, warm abrazos, emails, phone calls, gifts and expressions of friendship and love just poured out...it was overwhelming and fantastic and we will cherish the memories you all made possible. We are so proud and lucky to be a part of this community!

For those of you who didn't notice, we had a guest book at the reception that is available post-facto for your signature, so please be sure to look for it at our milonga this Saturday at Bantaba, and sign in. It would mean a lot to us!

    -------------------------------

The Colors of Tango event on 1/12/02 was a magical success, if we do say so ourselves...we are so thankful to Dvora Kanegis for offering DOTH this opportunity, and to all our students, clients and tango friends, we thank you profusely for your support of this outreach effort, which couldn't have been a success without you! We had over 200 non-tango people attend this event!

We're especially grateful to David Rubin of A Spice of Life for providing the perfect venue and delicious catered food during the reception that opened the evening. Dvora Kanegis had her work elegantly displayed, featuring new works that included delightful paintings and pottery, many of it inspired by her love for the tango dance. At 8:30 p.m., the crowd gathered around the dance floor to observe a solo tango demonstration presented by DOTH followed by a fashion show of sexy, sophisticated new designs by Fabulous Dresses. After the show ended, the DOTH milonga commenced to round off a particularly charming evening! We would be remiss if we didn't include a HUGE applause to our elegant, beautiful models: Sue Thompson, Sheila Howland, Cathy Gaugh and Felicia Dryden. And of course, to our dashing escort, Timothy Long! Kids, you were divine! Another round of applause to Russell Bauer, who continues to spin those cd's for our dancing pleasure and to the Spice of Life staff, who competently and warmly provided expert catering and cash bar service. We're looking forward to more wonderful events coming up in February and March, so stay tuned!

    -------------------------------

Our last Saturday night DOTH Bantaba milonga of 2001 was so sweet! Thank you all for making it so memorable. Though it was cold outside the evening of 12/29/01, warm tangos prevailed within! We had mostly local guests as well as a very dear friend who dropped in from San Francisco. Russell DJ'd to enthusiastic acclaim. At about 11:30 p.m., Felicia bustled in, her arms laden with extraordinary goodies...she contributed several cases of excellent wine accompanied by fresh grapes, elegant cheeses and assorted crackers and the most delicious fig jam! Our benefactress extraordinaire! Dancers were hard put to leave the beautiful spread to enjoy their tangos. Thank you, Felicia, for that lovely, generous gesture! We closed shortly before 1 a.m. so the heartier souls could wind their way to Chris and Kathy's Denver party.

    -------------------------------

December 22 turned out to be one of those nights...a magical evening full of holiday high spirits shared with many tango friends, new and old. We had guests from as far away as Austin, Texas and Copenhagen, Denmark! Russell dashed over after attending a holiday concert to DJ for us, Robert shared champagne, Jess had some amazing contraband (what WAS that elixir?!), Robert and Elaine showered the snack table with wonderful additional goodies, and the party didn't wind down until almost 3 a.m.

Around 1 a.m., Brian lugged in his guitar and Deb pulled out her flute (we're talking 22 years of DUST here!). Everyone was exceedingly tolerant and appropriately skeptical, but good-natured enough to gather 'round to sing 'Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire' with us, and no one threw rotten tomatoes afterwards! It was AWESOME!

    -------------------------------

On November 24, we had another terrific tango evening that included a pre-milonga class reviewing the rolling close embrace (thank you, Tomas y Chantal!) and the chain step. The party began shortly after 10 p.m. with roughly 40 or more dancers in attendance. Sukey Williams, head chef of Sukey's Cookies, provided an enticing selection of 3 of her favorite recipes for hungry dancers to choose from.

    -------------------------------

On November 3, we had a wonderful evening that included a pre-milonga class reviewing the basics, but primarily devoted to the Vals. Students were also introduced to the Eye Game. Once the milonga party began, the lights were dimmed, the music was turned up, the strings of christmas lights were plugged in and we got down to the business of dancing our beloved tango.

Soledad of Fabulous Dresses set up a rack of enticing designs in the lobby where ladies were generously permitted to change into one elegant design after another in the small studio and then take a spin around the milonga dance floor in the large studio! Brava and warm thanks to Soledad for making our party LOOK so good!

Tomas Howlin and Chantal Dauphinais, visiting master teachers from Canada, arrived shortly before midnight to delight us all by performing 2 sensual tangos and a delicious waltz. We wish to extend a VERY warm thanks to Tomas, Chantal and Pat for making our evening so special! Social dancing and apple and left-over Halloween candy eating resumed until 2 a.m.

    -------------------------------

Many of you go out of your way to express your appreciation to us for hosting these milongas...we want you all to know we are very grateful to have your feedback and support. Some of you come from as far away as Fort Collins, Colorado Springs, Denver, Golden, Aspen, Glenwood Springs and Lyons to participate. So now it's OUR turn to thank YOU for helping us create a more vital Front Range tango scene. GRACIAS POR TODOS!!!
